The basic value of the CAC 40 index in the amount of 1000 points dates back to 1987, and its name has been derived from Cotation Assistee en Continu (continual common listing). It consists of 40 companies with the highest level of capitalisation within the last 12 months and is the main index of Euronext Paris.

The index is revised on a quarterly basis by an independent index committee responsible and representativeness of the index.

The index is the most widespread indicator of the Paris market, and it reflects the performance of the forty largest stocks listed on the French stock exchange, of companies freely traded on the market and with liquidity in terms of market capitalisation. The movements closely correlate with the trends of the whole market.
