This London based company was founded in 1889, and is the third largest energy company in the world. In 2011 it was the fourth largest company, making it one of the 6 ‘supermajors’.

It operates in two business segments; Exploration and Production, and Refining and Marketing. It provides fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, lubricants to engines, petrochemicals products, as well as investing in renewable energy sources. It operates in more than 80 countries, in Angola, Azerbaijan, Canada, Egypt, Norway, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK and US, Asia, Australasia, South America, North Africa and the Middle East. The largest division though is BP America – the 2nd largest producer of oil and gas in the US. It produces 3.4 billion barrels of oil daily, and as of late 2011, BP had proved commercial reserves of 17.75 barrels of oil equivalent. It has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange, and is a constituent of the FTSE-100 index, with an estimated 21,800 service stations around the world.
